Although I was very sceptical about implants, I still
went and got more information from Dr. Bartels. Having
measured the density of my jawbone, he explained that my
bone carried all the requirements for a successful implant.
My sister offered all the other reassuring I needed.
Dr. Bartels made several suggestions and I chose the ‘four
implants with removable tooth replacements’ option.
The first surgery session was to insert the synthetic titanium
roots. It was painless due to the local anaesthetic – the
only unpleasant aspect were the sounds. My blood pressure
was also measured in regular intervals during surgery as
mine is often high and Dr. Bartels didn’t want to
put me under any risk. I must say that during all the treatment
I always felt good and well looked after.
During the healing process I was fitted with a provisional
denture and five months later I got my final tooth replacement.
But it was not all over yet. Three years later my lower
jaw was giving me problems. This time I did not hesitate
and immediately knew that I wanted implant treatment, as
I knew what to expect. With two short incisions, three
titanium roots were set to the left and right.
My lower jaw is now well serviced with permanent crowns
and bridges. The only thing that annoys me a bit today,
is that I should have decided for a permanent tooth replacement
in my upper jaw. But that would have meant that instead
of the four synthetic roots, eight would have had to be
placed and as a ‘newcomer to implants’ in would
have been too much for me back then.
